    I wonder how long it would take to cross the Baltics by rail (i.e. going from Tallinn to Poland). I’m guessing, with the thin connecting lines, it may be a long trip, possibly involving overnight stops.

    I’m kind of surprised there weren’t more connections built between the countries during the Soviet era. Or were there more but most were physically removed after the collapse of the Soviet Union?

      Russia didn’t like its subordinate states coordinating amongst themselves without going through it. See also: the different, mutually incompatible cyrillic orthographies of the Turkic languages spoken in Soviet republics.
