    Huh. TIL.

To me popcorn goes in the same category as potato chips, salty. Always salty. But apparently it lands with candy for a part of the world? I had no idea.

Do you sweet popcorn people get some other salty snack? Or are all your movie snacks sugary?

To me the ultimate combo is salty popcorn (maybe even buttery) and a sweet drink.

    • Even in the US sweet popcorn is a thing. We have kettle corn, or those tins with caramel popcorn. Salty/buttery is definitely the most popular though.

I’m sure I can find some if I look here too.

I’m curious about what people eat together with them, because to me salty+savory snacks go with sweet+sour soda.

Do people in these countries go sweet+sweet, or is there more to this?

In Germany, all cinemas I visited had a salty option, the most common being nachos with some dip. But I don’t remember ever seeing salty popcorn offered here, even outside cinemas it is rare.

Rare indeed. The first time I came across salty popcorn as a kid, I felt the kind of betrayal that leads to a livelong grudge.

I still think salty popcorn is disappointing and weird.

That’s so interesting. I love caramelized popcorn, but when I think of default popcorn, it’s always salty!

It’s kind of funny that there is another comment that says that sweet popcorn is wrong. It seems it mostly depends on what you are used to.

I was thinking of moving to Germany but I just can’t now. Sweet popcorn? In a theater? Half the reason I even go to theaters is so I can eat enough buttery topping with some popcorn mixed in to feel sick. The absolute madness of putting sugar on popcorn, I’d sooner eat a bowl of unpopped kernels

But for real all you salty/savory popcorn lovers out there: If you haven’t tried it yet put some powdered brewers yeast on your popcorn. That stuff is magical. Goes weirdly well on pizza too

I just learned that Western Europe are my enemies. If I find out they support pineapple on pizza, we’re going to war.

/s obviously, for those of you who are dumb fucks

I was at the cinema in Germany and asked if the popcorn was sweet or not, and of course it was, just wanted to make sure. So I asked for some candy instead. The clerk was soooo confused. “But… These are sweet too…?”. Yeah, but I expect candy to be sweet.

Popcorn at the cinema is always salty (or more accurately, fake buttery). Popcorn anywhere else is…eh, salty, sweet, anything.

Personally I don’t like sweet (kettle or caramel) but that’s just personal. My grandmother adored both kettle and caramel.

I suppose I didn’t mind chocolate covered Halloween style popcorn though!

Ooh, I’ve only come across sweet popcorn in China and thought it’s their specialty. Then again I’ve never been to movies in either Germany of France.
