Thank you, I’ll give Tesseract a shot. Currently I don’t know how to load up comments.

15 seconds later: I am IN the comments. Sorry. Thank you.

Also: you’re probably gonna get banned from .ml. It doesn’t mean shit, sign up to another instance and keep going

I’ve been here for god only knows how long, but I never knew anything about the different front-ends. Lol.

Fwiw, some advice for the wave of fresh r/efugees

This isn’t reddit. It looks similar, and it is similar by design. But it ain’t reddit. Hang back, lurk a while and try to absorb some of the lemmy “culture” before jumping into anything hot button at all, and be aware that lemmy is not a single thing.

Lemmy is not one big site. It’s a whole bunch of sites run by individuals and groups. On each of them, you’ll find communities (and it is communities, not subs, sublemmies, or similar). Every specific site, called an instance, may have different rules from the rest. So pay attention to where you are before jumping in all het up on a topic.

You might be on a community on dbzer0.com now, and find a community called c/paper. You might go over to sh.itjust.works and find another c/paper. This is part of how lemmy works. It is not a mistake, it is not a problem. But it is confusing. So be aware of it, and factor it in when you decide to post or comment.

This is great stuff. I’ll add a few hints of my own.

There’s no such thing as “global Lemmy admins”; there are the admins of your home instance (where you’re registered to) and the admins of the instance where you’re posting. It’s messier because each group will enforce different rules, but it also means that no group of arseholes can kick you completely out of Lemmy.

If you’re a newcomer odds are that you don’t know which would be the best home instance for you. That’s completely OK - almost everyone was like this, including me. So if you don’t feel satisfied with your home instance, create a new account in another instance and migrate.

Desktop users might benefit from the extension “Instance Assistant for Lemmy & Kbin” (Firefox link, Chrome link).

App users: remember when Reddit had a whole rainbow of third party apps to choose from? Lemmy is like this: there’s Jerboa (the official one) but also Voyager, Mlem, Boost, and many others. Give this link a check, or just look for “Lemmy” in your app store.

This is completely unrelated but I’m also curious while you’re here, what happens to our sign up data / how secure is it? Im slightly worried about pid on me in a lefty space these days.

Stupid me didn’t use a throwaway email or anything (can’t even remember if it asked for an email). I should prob just make a new acct

As secure as I can make it on a shoestring budget. Basically unless we get targeted by a nation-state, you should be fairly secure. If OpSec is a concern, I suggest deleting the account and making one on a VPN using a throwaway email

Admins can see your email upon registration. So if you’re really paranoid make an new account with a decoy email.

Is that actually true? I mean it would make sense but I’ve seen the applications interface before and it had no way to see the email, you had to go into the DB to see it.

@db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com is this still true, does Lemmy let you see email on applications? Or does seeing them still require going into the DB. If it does would you mind DMing me a screenshot of my application so I can see how different it looks from last time I saw it (0.18.4)?

It’s good they finally do that now. I know in the past they didn’t. Which seems really weird since admins can get it easily looking in the DB, so they’re not really protecting against anything by hiding it from them in lemmy-UI.

I didn’t like the direction the Reddit was taking with banning subreddits like WPT and bending the knee to Elon. I scrubbed and deleted my main and my alt last night so I guess this post is about me lol

    Hmm… There’s jokes here about “Second Coming”… “Plundering Booty”…

Banning NSFW, even short term, implies future Spez fuckitude that could well bury what was left of the place. Maybe it is a requirement for the C-suite to get their payouts when eventually bought by Newsmax or whatever?

Long ago when media was in physical form there were two formats. VHS and beta max. Beta was superior in most ways… but VHS had porn. Maybe this is what starts a tipping point.
