Reddit’s approach is refreshingly simple - you can be completely anonymous if you want to be. You don’t need to share your real name, personal photos, or life details to be part of the community.

This has already changed a bit, and I suspect it will be changing more in the future. They’ve shut down third party apps already, meaning they can get a unique identifier for your phone when you’re using the official Reddit app, and are making it harder to browse without being logged in. Anonymity is not just about hiding your real name; if they have your full Reddit use patterns between all of your devices, they know more than enough about you to show highly targeted ads and tweak their algorithm to fit your personality profile. Your legal name is not even relevant – but also, would probably be easy enough to figure out by matching your Reddit interests with your Facebook/Google interests.
