Just booted up the game again after a significant time away and figured I’d try doing something new; building a more robust base rather than something that’s just practical.

Thing is I’m used to searching only on the basis of practicality. So, how do you find nice locations to build something aesthetically pleasing rather than just fit for purpose?

I’m pretty simple on this front:

    1. Visibility over a good distance
    2. Proximity to water so it looks nice
    3. Pretty flat so I don’t have to worry about hills and stuff inside my base

Thanks, I’ll keep these in mind as I’m searching.

I just played the game till I found my personal paradise. If you already have a “practical” base you don’t need to worry about “needing” anything, and if you don’t have one, use your freighter as your “practical” base (which is a good idea anyway since you can call it to you wherever you go). I honestly wasn’t even really looking when I stumbled on my perfect planet. I was just doing missions or whatever and ended up on a beautiful Earth-like right by the beach of a lake that has an island in the middle of it with an ancient ruin on it. If you just play and explore, you’ll eventually find a great spot.

I’ve got tiny mining outposts in several places that are just EM towers, mining platforms, storage, and a room with a portal. Then I’ve got an industrial grow op with different plants on different floors with the correct number of plants on each floor that I can harvest what I need for a Fusion Ignitor with minimal excess.

Then I’ve got my freighter. Out of all of them it’s probably got the most effort put into it; It’s an S-Class Pirate Dreadnaught… with a pretty ehh amount of storage, but I’m working on that. I’ve got a little cabin aboard the ship with a grow op for some plants that I don’t recall why I had them planted. And of course the ground vehicle teleporter and the storage rooms.

Thanks for the tip, I’ll try to do more missions so I’ve got reasons to potentially find good locations.

Sounds like you have things very similar. The differences are I have a “main” base that I started back when bases became a thing, and I try to add each new decoration they give us. It’s where I have all my hireable NPCs (Overseer, Scientist, etc.) and one Biodome for each plant, Exocrafts, etc. So it’s kinda huge and ridiculous. I have my mining rigs on different planets just like yours, but one for each of the the major elements (Cadmium, Emeril, and Indium). My Freighter (S-Class Pirates say, ARR MATEY!) is my flying NipNip grow (I don’t know how many, but it looks like a dang field lol), plus refiners, extractors, the Exo teleporter, and a full load of Command terminals (free loot!). It also has every storage unit for easy access to those anywhere. Freighters are definitely the place to put effort in, since they aren’t affected by changes to the planets from updates. Luckily my paradise hideout didn’t get affected with Worlds 1!

Glad I could help. Hope you find your “home” soon! If you need anything in game, we can try to find a time to meet up and I’ll show you around my Freighter and main base and hook you up. I can’t give you literally anything, but I can definitely hook you up with most things (like Spawning Sacs, and a Void Egg if you want them). I have at least one of every item you can get in normal, except, of course, items unique to Expeditions before they made it so we could do them on our main saves. I can shuttle you to other galaxies, too, if you want.

          Thanks, I have a rough idea of the kind of place I want it to be but I’m probably going to compromise on it if too many other people have the same idea;

Paradise World or similar low Life Support using world with low/no storms. Area including a dial-gate for checking on interesting places with minimal additional effort and to give me more inclination to put effort into what the place looks like; anyone could dial my base and check it out.

For the most part I have the things I need on this save. I have a Bioship in progress… all the pieces ready just having an issue with the gates that I don’t remember what it was anymore. Regardless I use a Sentinel Interceptor, also S Class, for my primary vessel. Overcharged sentinel cannon shreds just about everything :D

Portals can be found on any planet (I think…maybe not the totally dead planets) so that’s not a problem. Use your Exocraft scanner to locate a Monolith and the Monolith will locate a Portal (make sure you have an artifact for whatever species dominates the system you’re in to pay the toll at the Monolith).

Yeah, Sentinel is best ship, but some people wanna Catch 'Em All.

Oh, and as far as other players visiting, you’re bases will show up at the teleporter to anyone that’s in the Anomaly with you, or in the system with you, but I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for someone to show up. I’ve been playing since day one and I don’t think anyone has visited any of my bases without me taking them there. People tend to visit other’s bases more on Expeditions or one of the highly populated hubs. And if you don’t want people to visit (so they don’t crap up the place with bases or you just want to be alone or whatever), I highly recommend hopping to one of the less-traveled galaxies in the higher numbers. Oh, and galaxies can help you find worlds more easily because they have different properties themselves. https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Galaxy

That page may not be entirely accurate as to which one is which type as I’ve been to them all up to Ogtialabi so far, and some of them didn’t seem to be like they should have been according to the wiki.

  • My favorites are:

    • top of a plateau or cliff
    • beachside with a sweeping view of the water
    • elevated above a busy grassland with interesting creatures to watch
    • angled to catch a sun/moon rise over interesting landscape
    • inside a very stormy area or with aggressive animals where I can safely watch it all through the glass
