Communications Minister Karhi is promoting regulations that would allow him to direct police to arrest civilians, remove them from their homes, or seize their property if he believes they have spread information that could harm national morale or served as the basis for enemy propaganda

    Oh fuck.

This kind of news feels like it just keeps coming. I don’t know quite what there is to say. I think most Americans adding “I stand with Israel” to Facebook profile pics don’t know that the people in charge of Israel are authoritarian ethnonationalists.

Jailing people for sharing truthful information that is critical of the government is just miles away from what anyone considers acceptable, democratic behavior.

Don’t worry, they’ll be harassed into retracting anything that suggests Palestinians are human beings by ultranats long before the government has to step in. /s

It should be noted that the draft regulations, as formulated by the communications minister, fully contradict Israel’s democratic values and are unlikely to be approved by the government’s legal counsel.

It’s no different than US Republicans trying to push for federal abortion ban, yet here we are everyone immediately condemning Israel.
